Good morning – The Greater Prince William Community Health Center is celebrating National Health Center Week on August 13-15 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Volunteers are needed every day to assist with free health screenings such as mammograms, checks for cholesterol, anemia, diabetes, heart disease, depression, vision and dental to name just a few.
The event will include free car seats, lunch, and music and fun children’s entertainment. So as you can see, your volunteer effort will make a huge impact on thousands of individuals participating in this super event. There will also be a volunteer orientation on Friday August 9 at 1 p.m. to give you all the specifics to jump right in and help. Many thanks to all for supporting the Christmas in July event to support the Un-trim-A-Tree Holiday Gift Program for needy kids. Santa and Mrs. Claus were down on vacation in Old Town Manassas and they of course were a big hit. I wish I had a video of this one little girl walking down Battle Street when she noticed Santa. Her expression was priceless! This program continues to be about a kid and a toy. Nine Restaurants in Old Town Manassas hosted this event by selling raffle tickets, accepting toy donations, live music and fun contests. This was definitely a fun and comical evening. Here’s a huge Cheers to these super restaurants – Mackey’s American Pub, City tavern, Malone’s, City Square, Carmello’s, Monza, Philadelphia Tavern, Katerina’s, Old Town Sports Pub and Grounds Central Station.
CASA has been given a new mandate by the Dept. of Criminal Justice Services to track the children they serve in a new management system but their computers aren’t powerful enough to do the job. Brain Injury Services is looking for volunteers to help a wonderful lady living in Manassas who is mastering new computer skills. The position is flexible and all support/coordination will be provided by Brain Injury Services. No experience is necessary but knowledge and interest in computer skills and/or iphone apps would be helpful.

Hendrick Honda in Woodbridge has started their Annual Fill a Backpack program to help kids at Potomac View Elementary start the new school year with all supplies necessary to be successful in school. You can drop off backpacks with age appropriate supplies such as wipes, glue sticks, crayons, pencils, notebooks and other fun things at Hendrick Honda and they will give you a voucher for a $19.95 oil change. The Hilda Barg Homeless prevention Center sponsors a Veterans Outreach program the last Thursday of every month from 10am-2pm. Come learn about services available for vets including housing stability, referrals, transportation, budgeting and housing search.
