MANASSAS, Va. — Manassas police Officer Heather Munsterman is recovering after she was struck by a driver that police said was texting while driving.
“Officer Munsterman is suffering from fractures to her ankle and pelvic area, a dislocated shoulder and a concussion along with severe bruising across her entire body,” a press from Manassas City officials stated.
Munsterman was conducting a routine traffic stop along Va. 28 in Manassas on July 13 when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle driven by a Herndon man. City officials said the officer has received wishes from many residents.
Delegate Richard Anderson, R-Prince William, has also chimed into the discussion. Anderson was the author of the recently passed texting while driving bill that makes it a primary offense to send a text message while behind the wheel of a vehicle.
“I truly hope that this incident is a lesson learned for everyone on the roads. Sending text messages while driving is dangerous, no matter what the circumstance. I pushed this law because distracted driving can take the lives of innocent victims, and we all must do our part to maintain safe driving conditions,” said Anderson.
A total of 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver in 2011.
