STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — There was an all-out pursuit for three people in Stafford County on Monday night after authorities learned that a stolen car was about to be sold via the Craigslist online classifieds site.

It started after after someone made arrangements through Craigslist to buy a car and to meet the seller in Stafford County. But a check of the car by the would-be buyer revealed the car had been stolen, police said. The buyer then called the sheriff’s office.

Now, While two people are in custody, a third man is still being sought. The pursuit began at an East Coast gas station on U.S. 17, according to Stafford County sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy:

Deputy Alex Smith responded to a report of a potential stolen vehicle at the East Coast Gas Station on Warrenton Road in Stafford. The citizen who called in the report told Deputy Smith that she had arranged to meet an individual to purchase a car after responding to an ad on Craig’s List.

When the citizen checked the VIN number of the car that was being sold with the National Insurance Crime Bureau it came back stolen. The citizen immediately backed out of the deal and contacted the Sheriff’s Office, giving the Sheriff’s Office a description of the vehicle and the three suspects.
