PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — A mother and her child drown last night in Lake Montclair.
Police were called to the 15500 block of Royal Crescent Court off Timber Ridge Drive about 11:15 p.m. where the SCUBA team found the bodies of a 40-year-old woman and a 6-year-old girl. Police said they are mother and daughter but their names were not released pending notification of family members.
A neighbor told police she found a 9-year-old screaming while on a walkway that led to Lake Montclair, about 8:30 p.m. The neighbor took in the child and waited for her parents to get home. She called police when they never arrived.
Once police did, officers determined that child lived in the same house of the victims and then called for a search of the area which included a police helicopter, said Prince William police spokesman Mark Merriman.
The 9-year-old was placed with Child Protective Services until a family member could be located.
The deaths of the two victims is still under investigation.
