Spring Cleaning, Community Events Planned in Manassas

MANASSAS, Va. – They’ll be cleaning up the town in Manassas this month at several events aimed at cleaning up neighborhoods and giving back to the community.

The City of Manassas Police Department is taking part in the 3rd Annual Litter Enforcement Month from April 1-30 with support from the Alice Ferguson Foundation and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Police Chief’s Committee.  The main goal of Litter Enforcement Month is to restore the integrity of our local watershed resources, raise awareness about litter’s negative impact on our neighborhoods and quality of life, and reduce crime.

Join the City of Manassas Police Department by hosting a cleanup event in your neighborhood and let us know about it. Also in April, the City is celebrating Earth Day with the 6th Annual Spring Cleaning Day at the Harris Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day includes free Pedicab rides, live entertainment, children’s activities, a community yard sale, free document shredding and exhibitors from non-profit and civic organizations with recycling and environmental information. On April 19, the City of Manassas Utilities & the Manassas Beautification Committee will host an Arbor Day Celebration at 10 a.m. at Walter Delisle Park.  Winners of the City’s Arbor Day Poster Contest will be announced and the City will be presented with the Tree City USA award for the 24th year.

On May 4, the City of Manassas Neighborhood Services will rally an estimated 600 youth and adult volunteers to transform the Weems Community in the “Big Day of Serving.”   Teams of volunteers will enhance the community through environmental, recreational, and educational projects.

The Big Day of Serving is one day in one community and will make an impact that will last for years to come. Volunteers begin their day at 8a.m. with a kickoff rally to get motivated and get their energy flowing. Project sites include Weems Elementary, Byrd Park, and Stonewall Park.  Projects include mulching, landscaping, picking up litter, cleaning creeks and ponds, removing graffiti, painting basketball courts, installing playground equipment, laying mosaic tile, andrepairing two baseball fields.  A free lunch will be delivered to volunteers at their project sites.  To round out the day, Neighborhood Services will celebrate everyone’s efforts with a Block Party, complete with food and live entertainment.
