Burst Pipe Displaces 8 Families at Homeless Shelter

DUMFRIES, Va. — Eight families were displaced late Monday night after a pipe burst at an emergency shelter in Dumfries.

Fire and rescue crews, and a Prince William fire marshal were called to the ACTS Emergency Homeless Shelter on U.S. 1 about 10 a.m. Initally, crews were called to investigate a report of a smoke but they arrived to find water all over the facility’s floor and sopping wet carpets.

Dumfries Volunteer Fire Department officials told Potomac Local News a faulty sprinkler head was to blame. No one was injued.

While fire crews helped mop up the mess, shelter officials were working to find places for displaced residents to sleep for the night.

“Thankfully, all those who were displaced have places to go,” said ACTS Shelter spokeswoman Rebekah McGee. “We are OK on supplies tonight, but I don’t know what we’ll need when the residents return. The need here is always great.”

McGee urged area residents able to donate supplies to call the center’s main number at 703-441-8606.

A stark contrast from recent nights for those displaced and rescue crews on the scene, the weather was a bit warmer than it had been with temperatures in the mid 40s compared with recent temps in the teens and low 20s.
