DUMFRIES, Va. — Dumfries officials have responded to a mass shooting at a school in Connecticut with a stronger police presence in the small town.

The Town Council, Staff and Police Department want to send our heartfelt condolences to the Town of Newtown, CT, their Board of Selectmen and their citizens. Our Children are our most precious resources. Our Teachers our are children’s guardians, mentors, coaches and shape our children during their formative years. The teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary School certainly deserve our praise for their conduct during a most difficult situation. May God bless the Town of Newtown, CT, our prayers are with your community.
In response to the tragic incident in Newtown Ct., the Dumfries Police Department will be taking the following steps at Dumfries Elementary School:
There will be a Police Officer at Dumfries Elementary School starting Monday until school closes for the holidays, a Police cruiser will be stationed in the Dumfries Elementary School parking lot, Police officers will eat lunch at the Dumfries Elementary School, and Police officer(s) will be present at the school when parents and students arrive in the morning and depart for the day.
It is hoped that the Police presence will place parents and students at ease and provide a sense of security.

A 2020 Lexus RX, stopped on the right shoulder, was struck by a 2022 Ford F-250 that veered off the road. The impact sent the Lexus into a guardrail before it re-entered traffic lanes and stopped facing oncoming vehicles.
The Lexus driver, Vernon S. Lee, II, 57, of Chester, Va., died at the scene. His passenger, Shannon S. Lee, 25, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Both were wearing seatbelts.

(The Center Square) – The National Transportation Safety Administration says the Army Black Hawk helicopter that collided with an American Airlines jet over the Potomac River last Wednesday was flying at about 300 feet at the time of the collision, above the permitted flight ceiling.
The permitted flight ceiling for helicopters flying over the Potomac River in the vicinity of Reagan National Airport (DCA) is 200 feet, which is meant to keep military and law enforcement helicopters clear of commercial aircraft landing and taking off in the already tightly restricted airspace around the nation’s capital.
