A former Virginia Railway Express employee pleaded guilty today of taking more than $200,000 in bribes, according to a press release from federal court.
Kevin Wirth Jannell, 49, of Fredericksburg appeared in court for the first time today on charges he accepted up to $4,000 a month between 2003 and March of this year in exchange for favorable evaluations of companies bidding for VRE subcontracts, a press release states.
Jannell used to manage facilities at the commuter railroad but was terminated from VRE earlier this year.

Jannell concealed the bribes by creating a nominee company and sent monthly invoices to the subcontractor from that company, falsely billing the company for services that were never rendered. According to court records, the total amount of bribes paid exceeded $200,000 and was less than $400,000.
Jannell will be sentenced Dec. 21 and faces 10 years in prison.
