Dumfries Landfill Public Hearing Tonight

DUMFRIES, Va. — Residents of Dumfries tonight will have their say on a plan that could allow a debris landfill to grow in piles of up to 310 feet tall.

A public hearing will be held tonight at six o’clock at Town Hall on Main Street where residents have been invited to speak about a request from the operators of the Potomac Landfill to town officials to allow the landfill to increase the height of their debris piles from 195 feet to 310 feet.

If the town agrees, the landfill will maintain the current footprint of 39 acres of land it sits on and not expand outward to its allotted 59 acres, and it will close within 15 years as opposed to an estimated 25 go 30 years based on current fill rates, according to landfill spokesman Burwin Reed.

The request comes as the landfill was cited with a $50,000 fine after Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality found the landfill liable after inspectors found leachate was improperly handled and was put into Prince William County’s sewer system.

As for the height increase, some neighbors who live nearby the landfill say they don’t support the change.
