WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The Virginia Special Olympics torch will pass through Prince William County this afternoon, escorted by the county’s police department.
The annual running of the torch through Woodbridge on its way to Richmond for this weekend’s games will start at 2 p.m., as runners cross into Woodbridge from Fairfax County.
Police will then escort runners south along U.S. 1 toward Quantico Marine Corps Base. The torch is expected to pass by the Prince William Eastern District Police Station at Cardinal Drive and U.S. 1 at 3:30 p.m., according to the department’s Facebook page. In years past, onlookers have gathered at the station to view the event and cheer on the runners.
Traffic on U.S. 1 will be impacted by the running of the torch, and drivers are asked to pack their patience.
Another event today that will impact traffic in the area is a scheduled appearance by First Lady Michelle Obama at VFW Post 1503 on Minnieville Road near Spriggs Road in Dale City. The First Lady is expected to make a campaign speech for her husband during the event, and road closures in the area are a possibility.
