QUANTICO, Va. — The crossroads of the Marine Corps, Quantico, will have a new commanding officer Friday.
Col. David W. Maxwell is expected to take charge Friday morning at a change of command ceremony to be held on base.
The ceremony will mark the retirement of Col. Daniel Choike, who was served in the Marine Corps for the past 30 years, the last three as commander at Quantico.
Choike was instrumental in the recent round of BRAC relocations, a federal mandate that saw the relocation of 3,000 federal workers to the base. Local officials also spoke highly of the retiring official, saying he was one of only a few commanders who reached out and chose to collaborate with leaders from the jurisdictions surround the base.
Maxwell brings with him a background working in military operations abroad and here at home. He worked to mobilize more than 600 Marine reservists in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, and most recently has returned from a regional command in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan.
Maxwell is married to Jennifer Diane Walsh of Ellicott City, Md. They have two daughters, Kelsie, 17, and Emily, 15.
