Parks to Hold ‘Kids to Parks Day’ Saturday

As part of the “Let’s Move” initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids, the National Park Trust is hosting “National Kids to Parks Day” on May 19. People nationwide are being encouraged to sign up on via website and pledge to take their children outside to a park that day. Several parks in or near the Potomac Communities are participating by hosting events in honor of the day.

Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge will be hosting a Kids to Parks GPS hunt at noon and 3 p.m. The hike will be 1.3 miles and GPS units will help in your search. Bring water and closed-toed shoes. It’s $3 per person or $8 per family or $25 per large group.

Occoquan Regional Park will host a Healthy Paddles Event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Rock Creek Park in Washington will host a “Kids to Parks” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mason Neck in Lorton will be offering a variety of programs. GPS rentals will be available. Feathers and Furst, 10-10:30 a.m., Picnic Area Pond Patrol 11-12 p.m., Makin Tracks 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Whimmy Diddles 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Hiking Helpers 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Lake Anna State Park in Spotsylvania will have Jack Corrigan teaching Geocaching 101. Preregister by calling 540-854-5503. It’s $2 per person or $6 per family. No park entrance fee 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Wolf Trap in Vienna will have children’s day from 9 a.m. to noon.
