Paving Planned for I-95 in Stafford

STAFFORD, Va. — Next week, work will begin to improve the quality of the ride for motorists on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg region by paving multiple segments of northbound and southbound I-95 in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

Collectively, 63 individual lane miles of I-95 will be milled and paved in the Fredericksburg region this year. Milling and paving eliminates persistent potholes, ruts and cracking, and establishes a new, smooth surface for driving that can withstand the persistent high volume and heavy weight of interstate traffic.

The following segments of I-95 are scheduled to be milled and restored with new pavement between May and December 2012:

Stafford County
Northbound I-95 from the Rappahannock River Bridge to the Route 17 overpass at Exit 133/Falmouth
Northbound I-95 mile marker 141 to mile marker 142 (Between Exit 140/Stafford and Exit 143/Aquia and Garrisonville Road)

Caroline County
Northbound I-95 mile marker 101.3 to mile marker 107 (Between the Caroline/Hanover county line and Exit 110/Ladysmith)
Southbound I-95 mile marker 116.8 to mile marker 111.6 (Between Exit 118/Thornburg and Exit 110/Ladysmith)
Southbound I-95 mile marker 108.7 to mile marker 103.7 (Between Exit 110/Ladysmith and just south of Exit 104/Carmel Church)

Fredericksburg City
Southbound I-95 from the Rappahannock River Bridge to mile marker 130 (Between Exit 133/Falmouth and Exit 130/Fredericksburg)
Spotsylvania County
Southbound I-95 mile marker 118.5 to mile marker 117.4 (Between just north of Exit 118/Thornburg and Exit 110/Ladysmith)

Due to the high volume of traffic on I-95, lane closures for paving are generally scheduled overnight after the evening rush hour has concluded, and before the morning rush hour has begun.

Overnight paving in Stafford, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania will be performed between 9 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday evenings. No paving will be performed on Friday and Saturday evenings. A single travel lane may close for a work zone at 9 p.m. Two travel lanes may close at 10 p.m. but must re-open by 4:30 a.m.
