Potomac Takes Early Lead, Wins

By TIM SWARTZ
Potomac Nationals

FREDERICK, Md. — Rob Wort got out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the ninth to earn the save in Potomac’s 5-3 win over the Frederick Keys. The P-Nats rode another stellar six-inning start from Kyle Winters who earned the win.

Frederick starter Kyle Simon (0-2) got hit early by the Nationals. Randolph Oduber in his first game batting lead off, led off the contest with a single. Blake Kelson singled and Michael Taylor knocked Oduber and Kelso in on a double over the head of center fielder Trent Mummy to give Potomac a 2-0 lead before a batter was retired.

The Keys got started early as well off of Nationals starter RHP Kyle Winters. With one out, Jeremy Nowak singled and scored on a homer to right-center field by Ronnie Welty to tie the score 2-2.

Potomac scored an unearned run in the second to retake the lead. Adrian Sanchez scored on a throwing error to give the Nats a 3-2 advantage. The Nationals scored another in the sixth with David Freitas hitting a laser out to center field to chase Simon and increase the Potomac advantage to 4-2. The Nationals added another in the eight on an RBI single by Justin Bloxom.

Winters (1-1) ended up giving up two earned runs over six innings striking out six. He picked up his first win the Washington organization. The P-Nats bullpen again was excellent as Wilson Eusebio pitched two scoreless innings and Rob Wort earned his first save of the year. It wasn’t an easy save as Wort loaded the bases with no outs and the score 5-2, but he was able to strike out the last three Keys to preserve a 5-3 win.

Tomorrow the P-Nats send LHP Bobby Hansen (1-1, 7.88) to the mound. The Nationals return home on Thursday, April 19 to face the Salem Red Sox for a four-game series and home stand.
