FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Two overhead, cantilevered sign structures will be removed on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area this week following recent inspections of the structures.
Beginning at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will remove an overhead sign arm on northbound I-95 at mile marker 117.5, near Exit 118 at Thornburg. Two right lanes of northbound I-95 will be closed for the operation, which is expected to conclude by 3 a.m.
The following evening, VDOT will remove another overhead sign arm on southbound I-95 at mile marker 127.3 in Spotsylvania, near Exit 126 at Spotsylvania. Two southbound right lanes will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 for the removal. All lanes are expected to re-open by 3 a.m. on Friday morning.
VDOT will take both structures to a VDOT facility for repair.
On both signs, a recent inspection identified a gap of one-eighth of an inch between a single joint on the overhead sign arms. Over time, a gap can put additional stress on the multiple connection bolts on the support posts of the sign.
VDOT has a sign inspection program in place for 31,000 sign and ancillary structures statewide. Each one is inspected at least every five years. In addition, ultrasound testing is performed once every two years on cantilevered signs.
Since February, inspection teams have performed an additional inspection of all 46 cantilevered sign structures in the Fredericksburg District after a cantilevered sign fell on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County on Feb. 11, 2012.
A third overhead sign will be removed in the Fredericksburg District on eastbound Route 610 in Stafford County at the on-ramp to northbound I-95. Ultrasound testing of the anchor bolts on the sign post indicate one of four bolts may have a crack, and the overhead sign arm and post will be removed. VDOT will announce the removal time and date for the Route 610 sign as soon as it is scheduled.
Virginia State Police will be on the scene for both removal operations on I-95 in the Fredericksburg area this week to assist with traffic control.
