Stafford, Va. — Several subtle improvements have been made to the Stafford County Board of Supervisors Chamber, making for a more modern and comfortable place for the county’s government to conduct its business.
The Chamber had new audience chairs installed, all with higher back rests. They replaced rows of older cushioned stadium style seating.
Four chairs were removed to provide better access for residents who may be in wheelchairs, said Stafford County spokesman Timothy Baroody.
The dais, where the supervisors sit, was also improved as a wheelchair ramp and rail was added to allow disabled residents closer access to their elected officials.
“The ramps were engineered to meet code and ADA compliance for slope, turning radius, width, rail height, kick plate etc…” said Baroody.
The podium at which residents can deliver comments to the supervisors was also improved, and now includes an electronic device that allows speakers to draw on presentations shown on large TV screens in the chamber, as well as on screens of those watching Board of Supervisors meetings at home.
Additionally, disabled residents should also have better access to the podium with the four chairs removed, said Baroody.
The chamber was also received new carpet. Improvements to the Board Chamber total $24,558, said Baroody.
The modernization to the Board Chambers comes after Supervisors in January began using iPads to reduce their paper consumption. Stafford officials told Fredericksburg.com the changeover this year would cost taxpayers $15,000.
