Woman Charged in Cash for Cell Phone Scheme

North Stafford, Va. — Investigators said a woman tried to sell a stolen phone to its rightful owner, and then got caught in the process.

A Blackberry cell phone was stolen from the Sport and Health Club at 315 Garrisonville Road on Feb. 1.

Afterward, the cell phone owner’s daughter began receiving text messages on her phone sent from the stolen Blackberry. The messages stated the victim could have her phone back if she paid the suspect $80 cash, said Stafford sheriff’s office spokesman Bill Kennedy. The suspect purchased the phone from a friend from that prince and apparently wanted to recoup her money, said Kennedy.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, the victim’s boyfriend agreed to meet the suspect outside the gym and exchange money for the mobile device. The victim had already alerted law enforcement about the planned trade, and deputies were also waiting at the gym.

The victim’s boyfriend met the suspect, exchanged money for the phone, and the suspect returned to her car, said Kennedy.

Deputies followed her to her car in the parking lot outside the gym and told her she was under arrest. But the woman – who had two children in her car – resisted the deputy’s commands, and two more deputies were called in to help make the arrest, said Kennedy.

Angela Alford, 21, of Pinto Lane in Stafford, is charged with grand larceny, larceny with the intent to sell, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and with resisting arrest, said Kennedy.
