Plans to Widen U.S. 1 Proceeding

Woodbridge, Va. — Another portion of Woodbridge’s main thoroughfare is about to be widened.

Transportation officials in Prince William County plan to present the details of widening U.S. 1 from four to six lanes — between Neabsco Creek just south of Neabsco Mills and Blackburn roads north to Featherstone Road — to the Board of County Supervisors next month.

The $30 million project is expected to take 24 months to complete and would connect a wider highway with a recently reconstructed and widened six-lane bridge that crosses Neabsco Creek, said Prince William County Transportation Director Thomas Blaser.

Officials identified this stretch of road as in need of widening, though they admit congestion along U.S. 1 in Prince William during peak rush hour periods is particularly bad in all areas.

“I wouldn’t say this section of road is particularly easier to widen, but it was identified as part of the Road Bond plan as a stretch of road to widen,” said Blaser. “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

Road Bond projects are ones that have been approved by Prince William County voters and are constructed by the county’s transportation department, not the Virginia Department of Transportation.

This widening is similar to an effort to widen U.S. 1 from four to six lanes in Triangle, near the National Museum of the Marine Corps. That project, between Joplin and Bradys Hill roads is scheduled to be complete in June.
