2 cartons of cigarettes later, Woodbridge man faces charges
A Woodbridge man was charged after deputies said man walked into a gas station on U.S. 17 in south Stafford County and stole two cartons of cigarettes.
The theft happened at the Shell gas station 535 Warrenton Road about 1:41 a.m. Tuesday. The store clerk told the Stafford sheriff’s office a man wearing a black jacket and black pants walked into the store and asked for two cartons of cigarettes valued at $47 each. The clerk put both cartons on the counter, and then the suspect asked for an additional single pack of smokes, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
As the clerk reached down to get the pack of cigarettes for the man, the suspect took off with the two cartons, said Kennedy.
A Stafford sheriff’s deputy on patrol nearby, unaware of the theft, conducted a routine traffic stop in the area of U.S. 17 and Old Forge Road in Stafford County. The deputy was able to ID the driver, link him to the theft at the gas station, and learn of the suspect’s several previous offenses in Prince William and Stafford counties, including an indictment for drug possession that was later dismissed in 2008, according to court records.
Sylvester Dawson, 45, of Woodbridge, is charged with grand larceny and as a habitual offender, said Kennedy. He is expected to appear in a Stafford County courtroom on April 5.
