Stafford, Va — Old Man Winter paid a visit to the Potomac Communities overnight bringing with him a dusting of snow and a light coating of ice.
Temperatures just before 9 a.m. Saturday were still hovering around the freezing mark, but transportation officials said roads in the area are mostly clear.
“Virginia Department of Transportation snow removal teams worked overnight in the Fredericksburg area to apply chemicals and abrasives to roadways throughout the Fredericksburg region, which received a mix of freezing rain, snow and sleet. The heaviest snowfall affected the northern and western portion of the Fredericksburg region in Spotsylvania and Stafford counties,” said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kelly Hannon.
Temperatures are expected to fall again this evening, so Hannon reminded drivers to leave themselves some extra travel time and to be alert for icy roads, bridges, ramps, and overpasses.
The freezing rain that was falling this morning was expected to change over to all rain this afternoon as temperatures rise into the upper 30s. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
