Blackburn Road Bridge Closed

Update:

At 4 p.m. today the Virginia Department of Transportation closed a structurally deficient bridge on Blackburn Road in Woodbridge. The road is closed between Rippon Boulevard and Wentworth Lane.

During a routine visual inspection earlier today, crews noticed severe vertical cracks on both abutments, causing the failure of a portion of one abutment. The bridge will remain closed until repairs are completed.  Crews will post detour signs tomorrow alerting motorists to use Route 1. The bridge carries about 6,000 vehicles a day.

VDOT will update the community with a timeline for completing repairs as soon as possible.

Woodbridge, Va. — Supervisor Frank Principi said a bridge that normally carries cars over the Neabsco Creek was unexpectedly shut down today.

The two-lane bridge on Blackburn Road, near Rippon Boulevard and Rippon Middle School, is closed for safety concerns.

“We have little information so far, but the structural engineers will be out to do an assessment of the substructure as quickly as they can,” stated Principi on his Facebook page.

We’ll have more on this as it becomes available.
