Senator Barker Honored for Advocacy Work

At a breakfast meeting to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month this morning, Senator George Barker was honored with the Leadership in Legislation Award along with Senator Janet Howell for their work in the General Assembly. Senator Barker was the chief patron of SB 1222, which expanded the definition of persons who may obtain a protective order in cases of domestic violence to include those in dating relationships.

“For many years, advocates and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking have been asking for equal access to protective orders and equal enforcement measures for violations. Those voices were finally heard with the passage of this new law.  Senators Barker and Howell were early champions for this legislation and we are incredibly grateful to them for their leadership on this issue,” said Kristi VanAudenhove, Co-Director of the Action Alliance.

Senator Barker commented, “I was pleased to work with the Action Alliance, as we worked to pass bipartisan legislation that gives victims of dating violence ready access to protective orders. Making our community a safer place has always been a top priority for me, and that’s exactly what this legislation does.”
