Woodbridge, Va. — If there is one person who has grown with the new Potomac Communities, it’s Carlos Castro.
Castro opened the first Todos Supermarket in Woodbridge more than 20-years ago, catering to a growing Hispanic population.
Today as a U.S. citizen, his largest store fills a space once held by Giant Food in Marumsco Plaza on U.S. 1 in Woodbridge. He also has a Todos Supermaket in Dumfries, as well as an insurance agency that offers money transfer, a notary public and bill pay services.
“It was an opportunity that we had, to become the largest store in Marumsco Plaza and now we are enjoying being the anchor store of the shopping center,” said Castro.
Todos Supermarket moved to its new location from just down the street, in Prince William Plaza. Castro, an immigrant with humble beginnings in El Salvador turned millionaire, says his business fits well into a new vision for Woodbridge.
“It fits well with the makeup of the population,” said Castro. “We’re no longer just a regular grocery store, we’re a reflection, not only our staff, but our customer base, of what the community is now.
The new facility has helped Todos Supermarket as they had long outgrown the old one Prince William Plaza, which has since closed.
Castro said that in addition to the Hispanic market, more people from other ethnic groups are starting to see his store as the neighborhood grocer.
