Woodbridge, Va. –– With the Wilmington Blue Rocks leading the Potomac Nationals 4-2 with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday, heavy thunderstorms forced the suspension of play and eventually postponed the game’s completion until Monday.
The ball clubs will play the remainder of Sunday’s game beginning at 5 p.m. and then play a seven-inning nightcap 30 minutes after the completion of Sunday’s suspended game.
The Blue Rocks jumped out to an early lead on Sunday with three runs off Potomac starter Danny Rosenbaum. Whit Merrifield led off the game with a triple to the wall in centerfield. After Carlo Testa popped out to first base, Nick Van Stratten singled Merrifield home. The big blow in the inning came when John Whittleman rocked a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right to make it 3-0 Rocks.
Potomac got a run back in the third inning. Higley was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to second on a ball hit by Cutter Dykstra that scooted under the glove of Wilmington shortstop Kurt Mertins. After Francisco Soriano bunted them both over, Jeff Kobernus hit a ground ball back to Mertins, who threw to third where Dykstra was tagged out. But Higley scored and it was 3-1.
In the 4th, Ryan Stovall opened the inning with a double to center. Yem Prades hit a deep fly to center that moved Stovall to third with one out. Mertins’ grounder to second base scored Stovall and bumped the lead back to three.
In the next half inning, Potomac crept back within two. Justin Bloxom doubled into the right field corner to lead off the inning and scored on J.P. Ramirez’s two-out single to center.
With Soriano at the plate in the last of the fifth at 7:47 P.M., play was called. After a 30-minute delay and major water collection on the field, the game was officially pushed back until Monday.
The Nationals will have a 4th of July fireworks spectacular after the second ballgame, and once again offer the Food Fireworks and Fun package, which includes an all-you-can-eat picnic and a game ticket.

Should Virginia ditch the longstanding practice of electing the General Assembly and the governor in odd year elections?
