Shot of the Week: I Hear You Knocking

Mary Davidson
Mary Davidson

As of next month I will have lived in my house for 20 years, so when I hear a noise around the house I can usually tell what it is right away.

Not so with an odd tapping noise I heard for the first time the other day.

“Tap, tap, tap,…tap, tap.” It sounded a bit like Morse Code. Every time I heard it, and looked around to investigate, it stopped.

Looking out my kitchen window this morning, I solved the mystery. A little House Wren had accepted my invitation to make a nest in a gourd painted to resemble a bird house I had recently hung from my covered deck.

She was having trouble getting a long twig into the small round opening of the gourd.  With the twig in her beak she kept pushing on it till she finally got it in, thus causing the tapping noise.

Case closed.
