Woodbridge, Va. –– Over their recent hot streak, the Potomac Nationals rode a surging offense and crisp defense to wins in four of their last five wins on the road. Unfortunately for Potomac, neither was on display Monday night in Woodbridge, as the Kinston Indians benefited from walks, errors and a lack of Potomac hitting in a 5-3 series-opening win.
Kinston (20-23) cashed in on Potomac’s sloppiness in the first inning. A pair of leadoff walks from Cameron Selik burned the Nationals when Jeremie Tice blasted a home run over the left field wall to give the K-Tribe a 3-0 edge.
Potomac was silenced by emergency starter Toru Murata for the better part of four innings; lefthanded prospect Drew Pomeranz was a late scratched for undisclosed reasons. The Nationals (18-25) finally got a rally going in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two outs. But Francisco Jimenez (1-0) came on in relief of Murata and got Sandy Leon to ground out to escape the jam.
Kinston added an unearned run in the sixth. Adam Olbrychowski, brought on to relieve Selik (0-3), got two outs in the inning before Tyler Cannon hit a ball to left field that was misplayed by J.P. Ramirez. Walks to Justin Toole and Roberto Perez brought home the game’s fourth tally.
Potomac halved the lead in their half of the sixth. Back-to-back doubles by Eury Perez and Jeff Kobernus got one on the board, and Ramirez brought Kobernus in with a single to right.
The teams traded runs in the late innings, but Preston Guilmet pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save to seal the Kinston victory.
The series continues Tuesday night at Pfitzner Stadium; Danny Rosenbaum takes the mound for Potomac against righthander Clayton Cook at 7:05 p.m.
