Man Pulled from Fiery Crash

Stafford County, Va. –– One man was flown to Washington Hospital Center’s burn unit this afternoon after he was pulled from a burning truck.

Stafford fire and rescue crews about 1:30 p.m. Sunday were called to a crash at 179 Poplar Road in the Hartwood section of the county.

The one male passenger inside the truck collided with a tree, became trapped inside, and then the truck caught fire. Crews worked for 20 minutes to bring the fire under control and to pull the victim, who is believed to be in his 30s, from the wrecked pick up, said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.

The victim is said to be in serious condition tonight.

Investigators say the crash happened when the pick up and a car collided. The collision forced the pick up into a tree, said Doyle.

The first arriving units on the scene used portable fire extinguishers to control the fire until the first fire engines arrived, said Doyle.

Virginia State Police are investigating the crash. The road where the crash occurred was closed for about an hour and a half.
