Stafford, Va. –– Sheriff’s deputies’ uniforms in Stafford will change colors starting today.
For years deputies have primarily worn brown, but now their uniforms will be made up of a tan shirt with black epaulets, black pants, a black tie and black leather accessories.
The change is a move to save money as it has become increasingly harder to obtain replacement uniform materials for the old brown uniforms.
“The new uniform will enhance the professionalism of the Stafford deputies in keeping with one of the core values of the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, which is professionalism,” said sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Because elements for the old uniform became so hard to obtain, some deputies used brown paint to cover up worn portions of their leather accessories.
The same accessories used with the old uniforms will also be used with the new uniforms, said Kennedy.
Federal authorities allow local police departments to use funds confiscated through drug enforcement cases to purchase new equipment. That money will go to pay for the new uniforms, costing taxpayers nothing, said Kennedy.
The older uniforms will be sold to other sheriff’s departments in the state.
