Firefighters Shave Heads for Cancer Cure

Firefighters in Woodbridge shaved their heads to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

Occoquan Woodbridge Lorton VFD held their sixth-annual St. Baldrick’s event on Friday, where 52 volunteer fire and rescue crew members, including Prince William Supervisor Martin Nohe, shaved their heads for a cause.

“How could I say no to helping OWL VFD and kids with cancer,” Nohe said in a press release.

The event raised nearly $30,000 for cancer research, and included members of the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation funds research conducted by pediatric cancer experts, and research done by young professionals is the field. Funds from the organization also allow local institutions participate in national pediatric cancer trials, said OWL VFD spokeswoman Rebecca Barnes.

All who had their heads shaved donated to the cause.

Next year, OWL VFD officials say, they hope to have even more support from the county’s Board of Supervisors.
