First Bathroom, Then Box Cutter for Intruder

Stafford County, Va. –– It appears a man walked into a hotel, asked for directions and then put a box cutter up to an employee’s throat.

A Stafford sheriff’s deputy was called last night to the Clarion Inn on U.S. 17 in south Stafford for a report of an attempted robbery.

The victim told the responding deputy a man walked into the hotel and asked how much it would cost to rent a room for the night, and then asked for directions to the bathroom, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.

The employee gave directions to the man who then walked toward the restroom.

But then he came back to lobby, meandered around and once again asked the clerk for directions to the bathroom, said Kennedy.

This time the clerk opened a teller door and attempted to come from behind the counter to show the man where the bathroom was, but as he opened the door the man put a box cutter to his throat.

The employee was able to get away and hide in an office, but he could hear the intruder rifling through paperwork behind the counter, said Kennedy.

The intruder eventually fled the hotel in a white pickup truck with a white cap on the bed.

Nothing was stolen and no one was injured.

He is described as white, between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans and boots, weighing about 170 pounds.
