I love movies, and as a former teacher of media productions you can understand why.
However, I never liked 3D movies and now I know why.
For me, film is like an art form. I love studying movies and enjoy seeing what people do to better tell stories.
Most of all, I love going with family or friends and discussing what we’ve just seen once the credits roll.
Despite the substantial bills I incurred taking my college-age daughter to movies; they pale compared to the cost of a recent trip to our local theatre to see a mediocre film in 3D. I didn’t even realize what I’d spent until the smiling snack bar guy told me how much our popcorn and sodas cost.
It was then that I looked at the receipt for our tickets: Thirty bucks just on tickets!
Seeing a 3D film is an experience. I still remember when we all went downtown to a 3-D IMAX film about sea life and coral reefs at the Smithsonian. That experience was awesome.
Not long after my daughter Morgan and my debacle my wife decided to take our 9-year-old son to a film. She was determined not to overspend for a children’s film and it took her forever to find a theater showing the movie in standard format.
Going to the movies today is all about 3D, but 3-D movies were introduced in the fifties and died by the mid-sixties. It flopped then and it will flop again.
How can you justify (short of mind-altering substances) an extra $7 per ticket to take a child to a flick? Just, wait for the DVD!
I love movies. I hate 3D.
