My Piece: Good TV weathermen are rare

Did you ever notice how many of our most respected “practicing professionals” don’t actually do their jobs?

Look, don’t get me wrong:  I respect practice and often enjoy the fruit, thereof.  Sports would not exist without practice. The big difference is that the athlete must validate their practice by doing their jobs.

The goalie has to stop the puck or ball, the placekicker must “thread the uprights”, the catcher must catch etc.

There are three professions that stand out but only one for which I have rancor.

The Attorney:  (Practicer #1) “Will I get off, counselor?”  “Well, son, during my 30 years of practice, I’ve seen…”

The Doctor:  (Practicer #2) “We beat it, Right, Doc?”  “Well, son, during my 30 of practice I’ve seen…”

And then there’s the TV Meteorologist:  He stands, hovering above the world as we know it.  He has only to wish it, and the whole world changes beneath him.

He tells us, “We’ll have 18-24 inches of snow.”  We get less than one.

He assures, “all this mess will track to our north.”  We wake up: no power, three to five feet of snow and then we hear National Guard should soon bring relief supplies.

What’s the moral of this story?  Never trust a man whose expertise depends almost exclusively upon a green screen.

Well, that’s My Piece, an’ I’m stickin’ to it.  If you’d like to respond, please do!

David N. Britt covers the interesting, offbeat and entertaining happenings that you would write about if he wasn’t already doing it for you.
