Virginia Railway Express will hold a public hearing tonight in Woodbridge about changes to its fare and bicycle polices.

The commuter railroad wants to reduce the Step-Up-Fare it charges those who opt to take Amtrak trains instead of VRE trains, from $10 to $5.

The hope is more riders will chose to board an Amtrak train bound for Washington, which will subsequently relieve crowding on the beleaguered commuter railroad. On many VRE trains it’s standing room only, say officials.

Officials also want to hear your comments about discontinuing the group fare policy, which allows riders in groups of 10 or more discounted fare. Many riders have complained about the special rate, VRE officials said.

And finally, with passenger space onboard trains shrinking, VRE wants to limit the types of bicycles allowed on trains to only collapsible bikes.

The current policy allows riders to bring full-sized bikes on board in the last three cars of each train.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission’s headquarters on Potomac Mills Road.

Those who can’t make the meeting can also email their comments.
