Stafford, Va. –– Residents in Stafford can no longer monitor the county’s emergency radio frequencies.
Officials today announced an upgrade to the county’s radio system, which now operates at 700 to 800 MHz speed, has been completed.
Officials for the past three years have been working to upgrade the system, which has now barred county residents and members of the media who use scanners from listening to emergency county communications.
Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy said the move is to protect the “privacy and safety of citizens we are assisting.”
Emergency radios in Prince William and Fairfax counties remain unencrypted.
