Stafford County, Va. –– Stafford County has a new attorney.
Charlie Schumate, who runs a private law practice in land use and real estate development, will replace Joe Howard who will retire Nov. 1.
“Charlie’s heavy dose of land-use experience made him stand out above all other applicants,” said Stafford County Board of Supervisor’s Chairman L. Mark Dudenhefer. “We are confident that his background in this area as well as his work with other local governments will enable him to hit the ground running when he comes to Stafford.”
During his time at his private practice Fairfax officials retained him as special counsel, and he also worked with the city’s board of zoning appeals, the planning commission and the economic development authority.
Stafford spokeswoman Cathy Riddle said there is no way of knowing how many cases Schumate could work as they county’s attorney.
“…He will attend all Board meetings, and his staff provides support to departments and other commissions, such as the planning commission,” said Riddle.
Schumate will begin working in Stafford on Oct. 25 and plans to relocate to the county from Gainesville.
