Boy Scouts event could impact traffic

Virginia officials say the regional traffic situation could get hairy next week as 50,000 people are expected to descend on the area.

The Boy Scouts of America will hold their annual National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green on July 26 through Aug. 4.

Though the festival will be held about 50 miles outside the National Capital Region, those who know the roads say they will be monitoring traffic conditions to keep drivers moving.

“Electronic message boards and signs providing directional information will be placed at anticipated entry locations. They will be activated prior to the event to accommodate early arrivals and will continue to be used through departure day,” a VDOT press release stated.

From a joint military operations center at Fort A.P. Hill, officials will use traffic cameras posted along Interstate 95 to monitor traffic conditions, especially at mile posts 104 in Caroline County and 126 in Spotsylvania County, the exits most drivers are expected to use to get to the event, says VDOT.

The Boy Scouts are celebrating turning 100 this year.
