UPDATE: Human remains sent to Richmond

UDPATED: The human skull and skeletal remains found on Furnace Road in Fairfax County will be sent to the state’s medical examiner’s office in Richmond.

A state medical examiner and an anthropologist worked Tuesday to identify the remains during an autopsy but came up empty.

Once the remains have been sent, it could be weeks before an identification is made, said Fairfax police spokeswoman Tawny Wright.

LORTON, Va. – A photographer looking to take a photo of a deer uncovered a dead body Monday night.

A resident stopped his car on Furnace Road in Lorton about 8 p.m. when a deer popped out of the woods. The driver got out for a closer look and then saw human remains in a weeded area alongside the right shoulder of the road, said Fairfax police spokeswoman Tawny Wright.

“An investigation determined there is apparent human remains just off the roadway on Furnace Road, just off Richmond Highway,” said Wright. “Our crime scene and criminal investigations detectives are going to investigate the case.”

An autopsy will be performed on the body at the state medical examiner’s office in Fairfax to determine the cause of death. The autopsy results could be expected as early as 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Furnace Road is a two lane, three mile thoroughfare just north of Woodbridge that connects U.S. 1 with Va. 123 in Fairfax County.
