2 Firefighters Injured After Mayday Rescue

Update 12:30 p.m. Wednesday 

Two Prince William County firefighters were injured in a blaze in Woodbridge Tuesday after they became trapped on the roof of a burning home.

The fire broke out about 2 p.m. in the 16600 block of Galt Court. Crews arrived to the townhouse to see flames bursting from the side and rear area of the house. Once battling the blaze, two firefighters became trapped but were quickly rescued, said Prince William fire and rescue spokeswoman Kim Hylander.

The two were treated for injuries that did not appear to be life threatening and were released. The fire was escalated to a 2-alarm blaze and help was called in from firefighters from Manassas, Quantico, and Fairfax to assist fire crews from Prince William in dousing the blaze.

A total of three houses were damaged in the fire and deemed uninhabitable. Three adults and one child were displaced by the fire, said Hylander. They are being helped by the Red Cross.

Update 3:40 p.m. 

Fire officials in Prince William County say no one was injured during fire today at a 2-story home in Woodbridge.

The rear of the house in the 16600 block of Galt Court became engulfed in flames when a mayday was called to rescue firefighters.

The fire has been extinguished, and it’s unclear now if the home was occupied at the time the fire broke out, said Prince William fire and rescue spokeswoman Kim Hylander.

Because of the fire, Prince William County Public Schools spokeswoman Irene Cromer said school buses in the area are delayed

“Students on River Oaks Elementary and Potomac Middle school buses 387, 333, 346 will be delayed. Other buses may also be affected by snarled traffic. All students are safe and, if needed, will be taken back to schools. Parents may pick them up there, and staff remain for supervision. Transportation will be provided to all students who cannot be picked up by a parent,” stated Cromer in a press release.

2:50 p.m.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Fire crews are on the scene of a house fire at 15539 Galt Court in Woodbridge, off Powell’s Creek Boulevard and U.S. 1, where a crews were called to help rescue a trapped firefighter.

Crews from Manassas Volunteer Fire Company report that at least two firefighters were pulled from a burning roof to safety during the mayday rescue.

The fire is a 2-alarm blaze, and we’re working to get more information from official county fire and rescue sources.
