Prince William County, Va. – The parent company of the News and Messenger announced today it is looking to sell some of its newspaper properties.
Richmond-based Media General, Inc., which owns the local newspaper and its companion website, Insidenova.com and the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Tampa Tribune, stated the company is exploring the potential sale of newspaper operations. No specific newspapers in its collection of community and metro newspapers predominantly located in the southeast U.S. were named, and no timeframe was given as to when the properties could be sold.
In addition to newspapers, Media General also owns several TV and internet properties.
News & Messenger and Insidenova.com covers Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park.
Media General changed the name of the Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger to News & Messenger in 2008, consolidating both papers. Late last year, the Manassas-based newspaper reduced the number of days in circulation from seven to five days per week.
The organization in recent months has put more focus on its web presence, branding its web and print publications as part of the “Insidenova Network,” which includes staffordcountysun.com, belvoireagle.com, quanticosentryonline.com and their respective companion print publications.
Editor’s note: PotomacLocal.com publisher Uriah Kiser was a Media General employee from 2006 to 2010 and worked at News & Messenger and Insidenova.com.
