Richmond, Va. – When Mark Dudenhefer finally arrived at the state Capitol, he knew he was no longer just a member of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors.
He was here to make a difference. He was here to accomplish his goals. He was here to be the freshman delegate representing the 2nd House District, which includes eastern Prince William and northern Stafford counties.
Having introduced himself to his office neighbors on the fourth floor of the General Assembly Building, Dudenhefer found that he had big shoes to fill. He is representing a newly redrawn district.
The 2nd District had been located in the far southwestern tip of Virginia, bordering Kentucky, and was represented for 20 years by Democratic Delegate Clarence “Bud” Phillips. During redistricting, because of population shifts, the district was moved to Northern Virginia, and Phillips retired.
After enjoying the proceedings in the House chamber on the first day of the 2012 legislative session, Dudenhefer, a Republican, said he realizes he has a lot of responsibility.
“I’ve never actually been in the House of Delegates chambers. It can be somewhat overwhelming when you consider who has sat in that room before,” Dudenhefer said.
He has taken his new position and gone straight to work. He said he has submitted a half-dozen bills on a variety of topics from urban development to transportation. One of Dudenhefer’s priorities is to improve transportation on U.S. 1.
“My primary goal will be to try and get a consensus and a plan on what we’re going to do about Route 1. It runs parallel to I-95, and whenever there’s a problem on I-95, there’s also a problem on Route 1. That whole area gets totally clogged up,” Dudenhefer said.
“Transportation is one of those paramount issues that stares us in the face every single day. So you can’t ignore it.”
Dudenhefer will have a big opportunity to address that concern: He was appointed to the House Transportation Committee by House Speaker William Howell. (Howell also named Dudenhefer to the Education Committee and the Science and Technology Committee.)
Now that he has officially been sworn in, Dudenhefer is optimistic that he can make a difference for Stafford and Prince William counties during the General Assembly’s 60-day session.
“I look forward to finally taking off the ‘delegate-elect’ tag, and being a delegate,” Dudenhefer said.
