Stafford County, Va. — A wild police chase on U.S. 1 in Stafford County landed a wanted man in jail.
A Stafford sheriff’s deputy spotted a car speeding in a 35 mph zone near the county courthouse in Stafford at 2:09 p.m. Tuesday. The deputy stopped the car in the area of Va. 630 and U.S. 1, near the sheriff’s office, and spoke with the driver.
While the deputy checked the driver’s ID, the suspect sped off, making a U-turn on Va. 630 and then turned onto U.S. 1 south, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Despite several deputies who had now joined the chase with lights and sirens activated, the driver ignored them until the area of Centerport Parkway, where a deputy deployed a stinger strip commonly use to deflate tires and stop fleeing suspects, said Kennedy. The car ran over the strip, which took out its two front tires, but the driver continued south as the left tire worn down and sparks began flying from the rim, said Kennedy.
When he reached the area of Layhill Road, the driver abruptly crossed northbound traffic and quickly pulled into the parking lot of a daycare center, and then onto a nearby Heritage Commons Drive. The driver then pulled his car into a yard at a home nearby the daycare, got out, and was arrested without incident, said Kennedy.
Peyton Crebbs, 45, of Midlothian, is charged with speeding, reckless driving, felony eluding, providing false ID to law enforcement, and with driving on a suspended license – his third charge, said Kennedy.
Deputies said the suspect eluded police because he was already wanted for failing to appear in court in Chesterfield County and on a felony drug warrant in Richmond.
