Warrenton Teen Seeks to Set World Sit-Up Record January 13 at Hope Christian Fellowship

Community encouraged to come out, show support

Warrenton, VA–Dean Yunghans of Warrenton will attempt to set a world sit-up record on January 13 at Hope Christian Fellowship, 4173 Bludau Drive, Warrenton. Dean plans to top his previous record of 6,000 consecutive sit-ups, and set the record for under 17 years of age, shortly before his seventeenth birthday. Dean’s goal is 9,000 consecutive sit-ups, which will take him up to 10 hours. He will begin the Sit-Up 4 Life at 9:00 am and is doing this to benefit Care Net Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs), a faith-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit with centers in Manassas and Woodbridge that serve women and men experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, seeking an abortion, or struggling with a past abortion decision.

“God gave me this ability for a reason, so I thought I’d find a way to harness it. I’m really bothered by abortion and how it violates the lives of the unborn, so I want to use what God has given me to benefit Care Net,” said Yunghans, a junior with the Classical Conversations Centerville campus, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 2717 in Gainesville.

The community is invited to attend Sit-Up 4 Life, which will be in Hope Christian Fellowship’s new sanctuary and community theater. Youth groups, pastors and others will have an opportunity to participate alongside Dean to encourage him, and even see how many sit-ups they can do.

“We have an amazing network of diverse Christian churches throughout Fauquier County that are passionate about protecting the unborn,” said Becky Sheetz, CEO, Care Net Pregnancy Resource Centers. “We are so excited that Dean would give so selflessly of his talents to this ministry, and that he would take such a bold position on the sanctity of human life. We think Dean is setting an extraordinary example, and we are trusting God to use it to inspire others of every generation to be voices for life,” said Sheetz.

Dean’s challenge has a family connection. His father, Wayne, served in the Marine Corps under Major Wayne Rollings, a decorated combat veteran who previously set the adult world record for sit-ups at 35,000. A Russian athlete subsequently did 36,000, and in 1981, Major Rollings took the record back by doing 40,000 sit ups in sixteen-and-a-half hours, at a rate of forty-one-and-a-half sit-ups per minute. Stories about Major Rollings have inspired Dean. This summer, Wayne took Dean to meet Rollings, now a retired Major-General, and they talked about, among other things, sit-ups.

To train for the record-breaking Sit-Up 4 Life event, Dean has been doing sit-ups and weight training. “I eat a lot, including a big breakfast, but I avoid sugar,” he said. The night before, he will do a couple of hundred sit-ups to stimulate him for the next morning. During the Sit-Up 4 Life, he will listen to the epic music of Hans Zimmer, the German film score composer.
