 LAW ENFORCEMENT UNITED RIDE 2012 Â
QUANTICO, Va. — Law enforcement officers from Prince William, Stafford, and from across the county are riding bicycles to remember fallen heroes.
The Law Enforcement United Ride from Chesapeake to Washington will make its annual pass through the Potomac Communities tonight and tomorrow morning. Police officers, each riding for the survivors of fallen members of law enforcement, are scheduled to spend the night in North Stafford tonight, at the end of the second of a three-day trek to the White House in Washington.
On Saturday morning, officers will once again mount their bikes and head north on U.S. 1 for a quick stop at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico at about 9 a.m.
For riders, it’s an emotional experience and a show of support for survivor’s families.
“We’re showing them that we are there for them, and that we have not forgotten their lost loved ones… just the show of support, it means so much to them,” said Prince William police Lt. Jarad Phelps.
He’s riding for Officer Michael Pennington, a Prince William police officer shot and killed in the line of duty on Thanksgiving Day 1990. It’s his third year riding, and his family has been very supportive.
“My wife understands that at any point she could be one of the survivors, and she’s fully supportive of what the cause is for and what we’re trying to do,” said Phelps.
The pit stop at the Marine museum is slated to be a brief event, but nonetheless an emotional one for those who line U.S. 1 to see the parade of bicycles.
The ride began Thursday morning at 7 o’clock when officers departed Chesapeake for Richmond for day one. Riders will then travel from Richmond to North Stafford today on day two, and will make the last leg of their trip Saturday for day three.
Last year, 136 police officers were killed in the line of duty. So far in 2012, that number stands at 36, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
