The crash that took the life of a Triangle man was one of several across Virginia over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

According to insidenova.com, Dennis Dale Lockwood was killed Monday when his car flipped over while traveling on Joplin Road near Triangle. An adult female was also in the car when it crashed is expected to survive.

A bicyclist who came upon the crash Monday later blogged about what he saw.

On Sunday, a grandmother and her 8-year-old grandson were killed in a crash in Fauquier County.

“Unfortunately, we had hoped to see the number of fatal crashes decline and not increase, which is extremely discouraging to see such tragic and needless loss of life,” said Virginia State Police Colonel W. Steven Flaherty. “We must continue to be vigilant in reminding drivers and passengers to make safety their first priority on the road. Fourteen traffic fatalities is fourteen too many.”

Two motorcyclists also were killed, both of which were wearing their helmets. Alcohol was a factor in at least one of the crashes.

Additionally, state police cited 7,745 speeders, 2,164 reckless drivers, and issued 700 citations for seat belt violations.
