MANASSAS PARK — A grant will go a long way to help feed children in Manassas Park this summer.
The non-profit No Kid Hungry Virginia donated $3,100 to fund meals in the city’s summer meal program from June 25 to August 3.
While the grant won’t be used to purchase food, it will be used to let city residents learn about the program.
The grant was awarded to assist the division with the purchase of promotional items like signs, banners, flyers, and to support activities for children,” said Krista Kelly, with Manassas Park City Public Schools.
The grant will help supplement the $30,000 the school division receives from the USDA for the summer food program.
The city expects to serve 320 children per day between two locations: the Manassas Park Community Center and Manassas Park Middle School.
Cereal is on the menu for breakfast, while chicken sandwich and turkey sandwiches, and cheeseburgers are lunch options.
At the community center, meals will be served weekdays from June 25 to August 3. Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No meals will be served on July 4.
At the middle school, meals will be served between July 2 and July 27, with the exception of July 4,5, and 6.
New this year, adults will have an option to purchase meals for $2 for breakfast and $3 for lunch.
The city began participating in the summer food program in 2013. The program any child 18 or younger, regardless of where they live.
