Curtis Park pool closed after swimmer contracts parasitic illness

STAFFORD COUNTY — The pool at Curtis Park is closed today after county officials learned someone was affected with a parasitic illness after competing in a swimming competition there.

From the Stafford County Government:

Stafford’s Mark Lenzi Pool at Curtis Park is closed today, August 16, 2019, and will be closed tomorrow, August 17, 2019, due to an advisory from the Rappahannock Area Health Department.

The Health Department is aware of four people with cryptosporidiosis, a parasitic illness, who participated in a swim meet at the large pool at Curtis Park on August 3, 2019. Cryptosporidiosis is a common occurrence in public pools and is one of the most common germs that cause waterborne illnesses in Virginia. There is no current evidence that the pool is contaminated.

Stafford County is taking the following steps recommended by the Health Department:

  • Out of an abundance of caution, the County is closing the large and small pool, for an initial 28 hours to allow for hyper-chlorination that will kill any potential Cryptosporidium.
  • The pool will open Sunday, August 18, at noon to allow the chlorine levels to return to a safe level for the public to swim. Any changes to the opening time will be sent out via Stafford Alert. Individuals with concerns should contact their private physician. For more information on cryptosporidiosis, please visit:http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/environmental-epidemiology/waterborne-hazards-control/?tab=4.
