Republican Senator Stuart calls for Northam to stay

RICHMOND — (Press Release) Senator Richard H. Stuart, (R-King George), today issued the following statement regarding the alleged yearbook photo of Governor Ralph Northam:

Ralph Northam is a good man. He has devoted his entire life to the service of others through his career in the Army, as a pediatrician, and as a public servant.

I am heartbroken for the many Virginians for whom this episode conjures the horrors of the darkest chapters of our history. I am heartbroken for the Governor and for his family. I am also heartbroken by what this episode exposes about the state of our politics and public discussion.

No matter the veracity of the photo in question, a man who has devoted his entire life to the service of others should have the opportunity to clear his name.

People who have been elected to represent Virginians should have the courage to say what is self-evident to so many people – that poor judgment 34 years ago should not outweigh a selfless service to people from every walk of life.

Ralph Northam is a friend of mine. I know the man, I know his heart. As a son of a rural Virginia at a time when racial attitudes were far different than they are today, he is a living testament to the potential for all of us to grow in love and understanding for all people.

We have a tremendous opportunity to teach our children that when you make a mistake, the right thing to do is face up to it and work to make things right, not run away in shame and disgrace.

Ralph is a man of strong moral character. He will do what is right.

The Governor has asked Virginians for the opportunity to earn their trust after this episode. I believe he deserves it.
