STAFFORD COUNTY — (Stafford County Sheriff’s Office Press Release) On Lancelot Lane on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 at 3:29 p.m, a victim reported being scammed out of $500 after a Craigslist transaction went awry.
The victim told deputies he found an ad on Craigslist regarding a vehicle for sale. He texted the phone number listed on the ad and was advised to correspond through an email address.
In his emails, the victim received information on the vehicle and was advised it would ship to him in a few days. He was also given an invoice and instructed by phone to pay using eBay gift cards—two in the amount of $200 and one in the amount of $100.
He bought the gift cards and provided the suspect with the information. Afterward, he realized it was a scam when he never heard from them again.
An investigation is ongoing.
