The Greater Manassas Christmas Parade committee is urging more civic groups, businesses, and other local organizations to sign up to participate in the 71st annual event.
Of the average 100 groups that march in the parade each year, the committee has about 40 signed up. While the number is on par with previous years, Parade organizer Mark Olsen said it’s best to secure your spot in line now.
“Many of those who sign up usually come within the last two weeks before the parade,” said Olsen.
The parade draws thousands to Downtown Manassas, will be held on December 3, and will march under this year’s theme: “Believe.” Regular participants include schools, churches, community groups, dance teams, businesses, and elected leaders, just to name a few.
“And Santa Claus. This is his annual visit to Manassas,” added Olsen.
The parade committee begins meeting monthly in March to plan the event. The group increases the frequency of meetings to twice a month by September and meets weekly from October to the week of the parade.
Parade organizers encourage new and unique groups that have not participated in the parade to sign up by going to the committee’s website.
The parade route begins at Liberia Avenue and then travels down Mathis Avenue to Prescott Avenue, until marchers wind their way into Downtown by way of Center Street. A grand reviewing platform is located at the Harris Pavilion.
The parade is known to attract Hollywood talent. Last year, actor Ed Asner served as grand marshal. Actor Stacey Keach served as grand marshal in 2012.
