Free Backpacks Help Explorers at Leesylvania

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Leesylvania Park in Woodbridge offers children young and old the chance to rent a backpack to explore the park. Backpacks are free and can be rented at the Visitor Center:

Birding – Get to know our feathered friends with this backpack. Inside you will find binoculars, a book that will tell you everything there is to know about being a bird, an Identiflyer bird song identifier, and two color field guides to help you. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Insects – Explore the world of bugs with this backpack. You will be able to get up close and personal with insects using a 3x magnifier, a port-a-bug netted container, butterfly net, observation container and two books that will guide you through your buggy journey. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Nature Art – This backpack is a great choice is nature is your inspiration. Try your hand at different art forms while you get to know Leesylvania’s wild side. You will be able to use a basic drawing kit, nature art box, rubbing plates and crayons to create images of the world around you. Also included are a nature journal for you to practice your art skills, photosensitive paper for sun prints, color diffusing leaves, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Nature Discovery – For the child interested in everything nature. Explore the natural world by taking a look at the plants, animals, and environment around you. This backpack contains a 3x magnifier, a 6x two-way specimen viewer, animal track guides cards, a pocket plant press and some great outdoor activity ideas to try while you are at the park. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Pond and Stream – Wade into the underwater world of ponds and streams with this backpack. You will be able to get to meet some hard to see critters when you use the field bag for amphibian specimens, dip nets, a 3x magnifier, a two-way specimen viewer, and guides to aquatic animals. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Rocks and Fossils – This backpack is a mine of information and activities for rock enthusiasts. Take a tour of Leesylvania’s geology with a box to store and sort your rocks, a mineral test kit will help you identify them, and rock guides will tell you all you need to know about them. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Tracking – Follow in the footsteps of the wild with this backpack. Get to know who those tracks belong to with track rubbing plates, a set of 18 track stamps, a tracking scarf, and guides to animal tracks and signs. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

Young Explorer – This backpack is for anyone with a spirit for adventure. Explore Leesylvania with a 3x magnifier, an animal specimen study box, field bags for plant specimen, nature cards, and books that will reveal the secrets of the natural world. Also included are a nature journal to record your observations, coloring pages and park trail guides.

On Sunday afternoon, nearly 100 people gathered in a Taco Bell parking lot less than a mile from the clinic’s doors with a shared aim: taking ownership of its now-precarious future.

To celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week (May 6-10, 2024), Clean Air Partners is working with A Few Cool Hardware Stores to exchange DC, Maryland and Virginia residents’ gas-powered lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers at select Ace Hardware locations in the region. DMV residents who turn in their gas-powered lawn tools will receive a FREE Ego Power+ replacement including batteries and chargers, while supplies last.

Compared to gas, electric lawn equipment can reduce emissions, noise pollution, health risks and maintenance costs and time. The program aims to remove about a hundred gas-powered polluting tools from yards in the greater Baltimore-Washington region.

The exchanges will take place the weekends of May 17-19, 2024, and May 31-June 2, 2024, at A Few Cool Hardware Stores network of employee-owned Ace Hardware stores in the DC and Baltimore metro areas.
